The Fleur du Cap wine-making team has released six rare cellar gems to go under the hammer at the Nederburg Wine Auction next month, showcasing the enduring quality of this prominent South African wine producer.

Crafted at Die Bergkelder following nature’s cues and embracing regional excellence, the Fleur du Capauction wines, all award winners in their prime, are wines of great complexity showing their true varietal character and sense of place from diverse vineyards in the Western Cape.

Rated as one of the country’s top dessert wines, Fleur du Cap Noble Late Harvest 2007 is one of two Fleur du Cap sweet offerings on auction this year. A Rhine Riesling, this wine is set apart by its consistency in quality and enviable track record as one of seven consecutive Platter 5-Star vintages between 2006 and 2012. Adding to this unmatched feat, the 2007 vintage garnered no less than three consecutive Veritas Gold medals between 2007 and 2009, as well as a Gran d’Or at the 2009 Michelangelo Awards.

The second Fleur du Cap dessert wine is an exceptionally rare Noble Late Harvest from the 1990 vintage. Presented under the Tabernacle section in the auction catalogue, only a single case of six bottles is available of this golden treasure that has stood the test of time in Distell’s exclusive underground wine library.

The only Fleur du Cap red wine on auction is a 2005 Pinotage which was ranked amongst the country’s finest in 2007 as an ABSA TOP 10 Pinotage. Emanating from dryland Stellenbosch vineyards, this robust, full-bodied classic flaunts aromas of berry fruit, plum and mulberry and a palate full of rich, ripe plums. A good tannic backbone has enabled the wine to age exceptionally well.

On the white wine front, wine enthusiasts are spoilt for choice with three beautifully crafted wines from Fleur du Cap’s top tier Unfiltered range.

Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Viognier 2008 was crafted from a single vineyard block in Stellenbosch and boasts a Platter 4-star rating. This aromatic, lightly wooded wine is full-bodied showing rich dried peach aromas with apricot and vanilla following through onto the palate.

With 4 ½ stars in Platter’s South African Wines and a Gold medal from the 2010 International Wine Challenge, Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Semillon 2009 is a lightly wooded triumph in elegance and complexity crafted from coastal grapes. Whiffs of green apple and lime with hints of nuts and toasted oak are enriched by layers of citrus, melon and apricot on the palate superbly balanced by fresh acidity and an enduring aftertaste.

Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Chardonnay 2011 has a cachet of medals including Veritas Double Gold in 2012, a Gold medal from the 2012 Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show and a Platter 4-star rating.

A blend of three vineyards in Robertson, Somerset West and Stellenbosch, this lightly wooded, full-bodied Chardonnay shows true varietal character with aromas of citrus, apricot and toasted almonds. The palate is fruity with fresh acidity complemented by underlying vanilla oak spices.

Chosen by a selection panel renowned for its rigour and consistency, this year, just 129 out of more than 400 wines were awarded the Nederburg Seal of Approval, and will go under the hammer at Nederburg on 11 and 12 September. For further information visit www.nederburgauction.co.za.
